What You Need To Know

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has proudly announced that the minor issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as certain actions by members of the public, both before and during the 2020 and 2021 school years did not negatively affect the 2021 National Matric Examinations. It reported that the entire province commenced and concluded the examinations successfully.

Here is all of the need to know information regarding the National Matric Examinations for 2021:

Important Dates For Your Matric Results

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has confirmed the following dates regarding the National Senior Certificate Examinations for the province:

  • Start of Marking Process – 08 December 2021
  • End of Marking Process – 22 December 2021
  • Results Delivered for Capturing – 27 December 2021
  • Release of Results – 21 January 2022

Where Will The Results Be Announced?

With the location as well as the expected time of announcement for the 2021 Provincial Matric Results not yet confirmed, the Eastern Cape Department of Education did state the MEC for Education in the province will be making the announcement on the 21st of January 2022.

How Will The Results Be Made Public?

On the 11th of January 2022 the Department of Basic Education released a statement announcing that it would no longer be allowing the publication of individual matric results on public media platforms. This was decided due to concerns about the publication of results possibly overstepping the regulations made in the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

This would have meant that no results would be made public to news outlets or published in local newspapers, as was done in previous years.

The decision made by the Department was swiftly challenged by a number of civil rights groups and educational boards in the Gauteng High Court. On the 18th of January 2022 the court ruled that the choice by the department was unfounded and that the publication of results would not break any regulation found in the POPI Act.

It ordered the DBE to go ahead with the publication of results as planned, granting that only results by students who provide their consent to have their results published, be made available to news outlets and newspapers.
