What You Need To Know

With the many challenges faced by The Department of Education (DBE), schools, and students due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many changes were made to the way the matric class of 2021 had to approach their National Senior Certificate examinations. 

Here is all of the need to know information regarding the National Matric Examinations for 2021:

Important Dates For Your Matric Examinations And Results

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has confirmed the following dates applicable to the National Senior Certificate Examinations for the province:

  • Start of Marking Process – 08 December 2021
  • End of Marking Process – 22 December 2021
  • Results Delivered for Capturing – 27 December 2021
  • Release of Results – 21 January 2022

Where Will The Results Be Announced?

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has announced that the MEC for Education for the province will announce all of the results regarding the provincial matric examinations at the University of Mpumalanga on the 21st of January 2022 at 09H00.

How Will Your Results Be Made Public?

On the 11th of January 2022 the Department of Basic Education released a statement in which they announced that due to the introduction of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) no results would be published on public platforms.

In the statement, the DBE, said that the publishing of results online, or as is tradition in publications such as Newspapers, would go against the Act. This means that publishing these results for public viewing would go against the regulations of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). 

How To Get Your 2021 Matric Results

Due to the changes announced by the Department of Basic Education regarding the publication of the National Matric Results for 2021 the following ways are available to students to get their results:

Physical Results Certificate

Students can get their result certificates directly from the school they attended on the 21st of January 2022. To do this they will need to provide the staff at their school with their proof of identification, for example their ID.

SMS Service

Students can make use of the National SMS service provided by the Department of Basic Education. The SMS service is charged at R1.50 per SMS. To do so they must complete the following steps:

  • Step 1 – Send a text message to 35658
  • Step 2 – This message must first contain your 13 digit ID number, followed by a space, and then your unique 13 digit exam number
  • Step 3 – Once you have successfully completed your registration your results will be sent to your phone number when available

USSD System

Students can use the USSD service as made available by the Department of Basic Education. Standard USSD rates apply. To do so students must complete the following steps:

  • Step 1 – On your mobile phone dial *120*35658#
  • Step 2 – Answer a number of questions as asked by the USSD system
  • Step 3 – Enter your 13 digit ID number
  • Step 4 – Select either “Yes/No” to opt-in or opt-out to comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act regulations
  • Step 5 – Your results will be sent to you per subject as they are made available

Online

Students can also register to view their results on the Department of Basic Education website. This process involves two-step verification and students will need to provide both their 13 digit ID number as well as their unique 13 digit exam number

Newspapers

With the ruling by the Gauteng High Court on the 18th of January 2022, students who expressly provided their consent to have their results published on public media platforms, such as local Newspapers, will be able to view their results within specified local Newspapers on the 22nd of January 2022.

How The Matric Results For 2021 Were Affected By Covid-19

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic the Mpumalanga Department of Education said in a recent media statement that although the impact of the Covid-19 virus continues to be a cause for concern, no issues were reported at any of the examination centers or marking facilities.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education, adhering to National Regulations, has welcomed the decision to move the date for the announcement of results to the 21st of January 2022.

Mpumalanga Matric Results 2020

The class of 2020 in Mpumalanga achieved a pass rate of 74%. This was recorded as 6% lower than the 80% achieved during the 2019 National Matric Examinations.

Mpumalanga has experienced a fluctuating matric pass rate from 2016 until 2019.

The province was finally able to enter into the 80 percentile range in their 2019 matric year.

For the Mpumalanga class of 2020, the matric pass rate was 74%. This is 6% lower than the 80% that they scored in 2019.

Mpumalanga’s matric class of 2020 was made up of 30.4% Bachelor’s Degree Passes. 27% of their students received a Diploma pass whilst 16.3% were made up of Higher Certificate Passes. 18 students in Mpumalanga received an NSC pass in their 2020 matric finals.

Options If You Are Unhappy With Your Results 

It might happen that you are not happy with your matric results. You have until the 26th of March 2021 to apply for re-marking, re-checking or viewing of your examination paper. 

To apply, you must fill in an application form for re-checking and re-marking. You will be able to find these forms at any District offices and your respective school. These application forms will also be made available at examinations centres where students wrote.

The fees are structures as follows:

  • Re-mark: R120
  • Re-check: R29Viewing: R234

Please keep in mind that a viewing of the exam paper can only be done after a re-mark or a re-check. The applications for this close 7 days after the release of the respective re-mark or re-check. 

Any candidate that is from a non-paying school or who have been granted a concession on school fee payments do not have to pay for the remarking of rechecking. 

Withheld Results 

Examination irregularities will mean that your matric results will be withheld. 

You can either:

  • Contact your school or district office and ask why your results are being withheld, OR
  • You can appeal in writing and apply to write the May/June examinations. 

Rewriting 

All students are given a second chance to write their matric exams in June 2021. This can be either because you want to improve your results or because you did not pass the first time. 

Students who were absent during the combined November examinations can also write at this time. Applications close on the 26th of March 2021.
