IEB Matric Results 2021

The IEB (Independent Examination Board) has released the results for their National Senior Certificate Examination for 2021. Here you will find all of the information you need regarding the 2021 results for the IEB Examination.

What You Need To Know

The IEB has announced, on the 19th of January 2022, that the class of 2021 has continued the success of previous years with a pass rate of 98.39%. This is an increase of .33% from 98.06% achieved during their 2020 National Senior Certificate Examinations.

Anne Oberholzer, CEO of the IEB, stated that the class of 2021 truly defied the odds, having to complete both their Grade 11 and Grade 12 years during the Covid-19 pandemic. She is recorded as saying that, “most Grade 11 learners in 2020 spent much less time at school and were essentially the test cases of the greatest online tuition experiment of our time.”

Important Statistics For The IEB 2021 Matric Results

Announced on the 19th of January 2022, the following statistics explore the IEB Matric Results for 2021:

  • National Senior Certificate Pass Rate: 98.39%

Of the 13 825 IEB students nationwide (both full- and part-time candidates) the following results were achieved:

  • Degree Pass Percentage: 89.2% (Increase from 88.42%)
  • Diploma Pass Percentage: 7.82% (Decrease from 8.14%)
  • Higher Certificate Pass Percentage: 1.37% (Increase from 1.51%)

Publication Of Results

Despite the announcement by the Department of Basic Education on the 11th of January 2022, stating that the publication of individual matric results on public media platforms, is an overstepping of the regulations found within the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). The Gauteng High Court on the 18th of January 2022 ruled that it was required that the publication of results go ahead as was done in the past.

This means that Matric Results would still be published in news outlets such as Newspapers.

The IEB announced on the 18th of January 2022 that it would still allow for the publication of results on public media platforms. It did however clarify that only those students who provided express consent for their results to be made public, would see their results published. This assures that no conflict with the POPI Act arises.

Here Are South Africa’s IEB 2020 Matric Results

The 2020 IEB Matric Results have been released. The IEB averaged a total of 98.07% for their matric finals

Although the pass rate for 2020 was lower than in 2019, the IEB matriculants were still able to stay within the same 98 percentile range. This is an incredible achievement for the IEB with all the school days that were missed due to COVID-19.

The pandemic and fewer school days have not seemed to make much of an impact on the IEB matric results of 2020. Whilst this is the lowest that we have seen the IEB matric results for some time, the IEB pass rate has not dropped below 98% for over 10 years.

  • 88.42% of IEB matrics from the year 2020 achieved Bachelor’s Degree passes: This is slightly lower than the 89.51% of BD passes in 2019
  • 8.14% of the 2020 IEB matrics achieved a diploma pass. In 2019, the number of diploma passes was lower at 7.91%
  • 1.51% of the IEB class of 2020 achieved higher certificate passes. 1.4% of the IEB matrics of 2019 received a higher certificate pass
