Distance learning is studying online instead of at a campus. This is a way for students to be in charge of their own study times. It allows students to do other things, such as work to earn an income, while they are studying.

Studying through distance learning means that you do not attend classes or lectures in person. Your course work is posted on an online platform of the institution’s choosing, where you as a student can access it at any time.

What Is A Distance Learning Institution?

Distance learning institutions are educational institutions that offer courses only through distance learning. Some universities and colleges do offer distance learning, but also offer face-to-face classes, and so are not called distance learning institutions.

Is A Distance Education Degree Valid?

Yes, a course studied through distance learning is valid as long as you complete the requirements for the course.

Does NSFAS Fund Distance Learning Courses?

Yes, NSFAS does fund distance learning courses, but only at South African universities and TVET colleges.

Do TVET Colleges Offer Distance Learning?

Yes, some TVET colleges do offer courses through distance learning. Check with the TVET college you are applying to if they offer distance learning. If they do, check whether it is available for all courses, or only some.

About Matric Programmes

Matric Rewrite

Matric Rewrite is available to anyone under the age of 21 who either failed Matric and can pass by improving the marks in four subjects or fewer, or who passed Matric but are unsatisfied with their results and would like to improve the marks in four subjects or fewer.

You may rewrite your Matric up to five years after writing your Matric final exams. You may rewrite a maximum of four subjects. These must be subjects that you wrote for your Matric final exams. You may not change subjects for a Matric Rewrite.

Note that if you failed Matric and will not pass by improving the marks in four subjects or fewer, you will not be allowed to rewrite. However, you can wait until you are 21 and then apply for a Matric Upgrade instead.

To apply for a Matric Rewrite, you will need:

A copy of your Statement of Results
A certified copy of your ID

Matric Upgrade

Matric Upgrade is available to anyone over the age of 21 who would like to improve their marks. You may upgrade a maximum of four subjects. You may also choose to change any four subjects.

Note that you may apply for a Matric Upgrade as early as 19, but you must be over the age of 21 to write the exams. This is because you will write the Adult Matric exams.

To apply for a Matric Upgrade, you will need:

A copy of your Statement of Results
A certified copy of your ID

Adult Matric

Adult Matric is an option available to adults over the age of 21 who did not get to complete their high school education. No matter the reason for not completing Matric, you can apply for Adult Matric.

Once you have successfully completed your Adult Matric, you will receive your Senior Certificate (Amended). This functions exactly the same way as a National Senior Certificate, which you would have received at the end of your Matric year in high school.

To apply for your Adult Matric, you will need:

A copy of your Grade 9 certificate/report or equivalent
A certified copy of your ID

About NATED Courses

NATED stands for National Accredited Technical Education Diploma. These courses are accredited by QCTO (the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations). This means that potential employers recognise NATED qualifications as formal qualifications.

NATED Courses are also recognised both locally and internationally.
