A Bachelor’s Degree Pass is the highest passing level that you can achieve at the end of Matric. There are four passing levels:

  • Higher Certificate pass

The highest pass is a Bachelor’s Degree pass, and the lowest pass is a Matric pass. A Matric pass is also the minimum requirement to pass Matric. If you do not meet the requirements for a Matric pass, you will not pass Matric.

  • 40% or above for your Home Language subject

  • 30% or above for three other subjects

Universities offer Higher Certificate courses, Diploma courses, and Bachelor’s Degree courses. This means that the only passing level that does not allow you to apply for university is the Matric pass. 

Note that the requirements listed above are only the minimum requirements. Achieving these marks does not guarantee your admission into any university courses.

Can You Get A Bachelor's Degree If You Fail One Subject?

Yes, you can still achieve a Bachelor’s Degree pass if you failed one subject, as long as you do not fail your languages. You must pass both your Home Language subject and your First Additional Language subject to achieve a Bachelor’s pass. 

How Many Points Is A Bachelor's?

A Bachelor’s Degree pass has a minimum APS requirement of 23. The minimum APS requirement for each passing level is as follows: 

  • Bachelor’s pas – 23
  • Diploma pass – 19
  • Higher Certificate pass – 15
  • NSC pass/Matric pass – 14

Yes, a Bachelor’s Degree pass is higher than a Diploma pass. This is because a Bachelor’s Degree qualification is a higher educational level than a Diploma qualification. A Bachelor’s Degree is NQF level 7. A Diploma is NQF level 6.
