Matric Results And Public Platform Release

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) released a statement on 11 January 2022 to announce that matric results would no longer be made public via social media platforms. This decision was highly influenced by the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

The DBE stated that publishing personal information, such as matric results, would be a breach of the POPI Act. This conclusion was, however, challenged by some civil rights and educational groups. They reached out to the Gauteng High Court to reverse this decision.

The Gauteng High Court ruled on 18 January 2022 that they would contrast the decision made by the DBE and would allow matric results to be published on social media platforms as done in the past.
